Globally, the use of virtual teams, which is a team that utilizes technology to mediate interaction and communication amongst team members through commonly used methods such as video-conferencing, e-mails, and text messages, has been on the rise in recent years. Companies invest significant financial resources to make this teaming arraignment work. Organizations seek to maximize the effectiveness of virtual teams by identifying factors that may have a positive impact on performance. This study examines emotional intelligence, collective/ shared team leadership style, and virtual team effectiveness by analyzing data collected from 84 virtual team members. A bi-variate correlation analysis was used to determine if there is a positive relationship between these variables. By understanding the relationship between these factors, organizations can train individuals to maximize their positive impact as a virtual team member. It was determined that there were statistically significant, correlations between total overall emotional intelligence scores and both transformational and laissez-faire collective leadership styles of a virtual team.
