While turnover has been studied extensively, a limited number of studies have drawn from international samples and an even smaller number have specifically focused on differences across countries. Review of turnover from a global perspective shows that studies exist that examine turnover within a particular country or combination of countries and across different national culture dimensions. However, these studies are not necessarily inclusive of a wide ranging possible combination of countries and cultural dimensions that exist. As the turnover literature from a global perspective continues to develop, more insight is needed as to the specific reasons that make employees from differing national cultures adopt the decision to leave. This study provides further clarity to this question through the examination of global turnover data from a multinational manufacturing organization. Drawing upon existing scores of national culture, reasons for leaving are analyzed across three countries (U.S., India, and Mexico) and five national culture dimensions. The resulting analysis and discussion not only contribute to the current understanding of cross-cultural management, but also provide useful insight for optimizing HR practices within organizations.
