MikoLaj Piotr Gorecki, a son of world-renowned composer Henryk Gorecki, was born in 1971. His life has been connected to music since early childhood. Having studied violin and piano, he developed his passion for composing and eventually decided to follow in his father's footsteps, becoming a composer on his own.In my doctoral essay I provide a more thorough assessment of MikoLaj Piotr Gorecki's compositional style based on the analysis of selected piano compositions: Piano Sonata op. 34, Toccata for Two Pianos, Sonata for Clarinet and Piano as well as Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra. In addition, I describe the composer's approach to his works, i.e., compositional techniques and influences Gorecki draws upon. Moreover, this essay identifies the challenges which Gorecki puts in front of the performer, including but not limited to harmony, rich chordal texture and complex rhythmic structures. Conversations with the composer and performance of his music in public settings have greatly contributed to my understanding of his music and compositional style. The research has shown that MikoLaj Piotr Gorecki's output has not been analyzed and described thoroughly thus clarification of the structural, technical and stylistic aspects is important to bring a more critical understanding to his music. Gorecki's music is contextualized by me in three aspects: Gorecki's musical roots, family bonds and national heritage, and finally considered in light of compositional trends and movements present in the modernist and postmodernist eras. The aim is to demonstrate that Gorecki considerably contributes to the music of the modern era although he has not received a well-deserved recognition.
