Sexual dysfunction is a multifaceted disease with a correlation between co-morbidities involving multiple processes associated with low testosterone, environmental exposures, mental health status, and treatments. This project examines provider assessment practices for sexual health and dysfunction in a VA community-based primary care clinic utilizing a validated sexual health screening questionnaire for men of all ages. However, providers lack education and training on sexual health assessment and treatment and often make assumptions about a patient's sexual activity or sexual problems based on demographics such as age, leading to missed opportunities to provide high-quality care. Integrating an evidence-based education and implementation protocol for provider use, as well as an evidenced-based sexual health screening tool, could help identify patients who have sexual health concerns that otherwise would not have been addressed during their appointment. The Stetler Model was the chosen framework to help integrate the practice change. Upon completion of the project, the data was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the provider sexual health dysfunction education and patient questionnaire utilization on identifying patients who require further assessment, workup, or treatment for sexual health concerns.
