Housing insecurity is a prevalent problem among college students, with many struggling to pay rent and forced to live in overcrowded or unsafe conditions. Although a college degree can significantly improve a student's future earning potential, students have a short credit history, making it challenging to secure affordable housing without paying expensive guarantee fees. This situation causes not only financial difficulties but also psychological insecurity due to the lack of belonging to a community.Communal living can help students find a sense of belonging and identity, which is crucial to their self-determination. Co-living, a type of communal living, involves a group of people living together in a community. Research indicates that living with others can reduce anxiety and improve mental well-being, particularly among young people who need security and a sense of belonging. In addition, communal living can offer college students a cost-effective, secure, affordable, and inclusive environment. The affordability of housing is directly impacted by site selection and building methods. This thesis explores how underutilized urban infrastructure can be revitalized by re-purposing it with upcycled materials. The Brooklyn Bridge's anchorage, an underutilized space, has been selected as a prototype. The anchorage is a national historic landmark with an ample interior space composed of barrel-vaulted masonry and brick-arched spaces. This study explores how the creative tension between pre-determined forms of shipping containers and existing historic volumes can cultivate a communal habitat.
