The COVID-19 pandemic shut down the world in the spring of 2020 leading to school closures and a shift to learning online. United States students lost a quarter of a school year in the classroom which has since created a cohort of students with lower academic performances compared to groups of students in the same grades prior to the pandemic. Personalized learning is an approach to teaching and learning where students are taught based on individual academic needs where students have a choice and voice in when, where, and how they learn. Personalized learning has shown promising results for students in the area of math and for lower-performing populations. The current study used a quantitative approach to analyze student performance in math and reading on the NWEA MAP Growth assessments. Using the chi-square test of independence, the current study resulted in significant results linked to personalized learning and academic achievement in the area of math for the entire student population and for students academically at-risk and economically disadvantaged. The current study also found a relationship between personalized learning and higher levels of academic achievement in reading and math for all students. Personalized learning is effective for students dealing with learning loss from the pandemic and shows the greatest impact in the areas most negatively impacted academically by the pandemic.
