Adolescent girls have been known to face significant difficulties with low self-esteem. Most research indicates that there is a significant drop in self-esteem once girls reach adolescence in comparison to boys (Guindon, 2009). Team sports can offer an opportunity for adolescent girls to develop athletic competence, team-work skills, and self-esteem. Much of the research that has evaluated the impact of team sports on self-esteem development in adolescent girls has been quantitative and indicated that sports can positively influence self-esteem (depending on mediating factors such as athletic competence perception and body-image factors). This study utilized a qualitative phenomenological approach to assess the "what" and "how" in the lived experiences of adolescent girls in team sports that impacted self-esteem development. Four adolescent girls from the Chicago area were interviewed in this study (between the ages of 13 and 17), coming from a variety of team sports and demographic backgrounds. Overall, how team sports impacted self-esteem development appeared to be a mix of positive and negative, depending on the context and environment of the team. Four themes appeared during data analysis in answering what aspects of team sports impacted self-esteem: competition, coaching, body image, and social. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that those working closely with adolescent girls should ensure a positive and inclusive team environment due to the importance of the social component of team sports for adolescent girls, as it appears to mediate much of the self-esteem impacts. For example, it is important that positive reinforcement is a crucial component of coaching style.
