African Americans have the lowest marriage and highest divorce rates by comparison to any other ethnic group in the United States. Reasons for these findings can be associated with lack of personal qualified selection, single parent homes, lack of parental involvement, and external factors. Through generic qualitative research and utilizing the attachment theory, I explored the experience of African American women regarding the influence of parental attachment when selecting a romantic partner. Attachment is based on the level of care provided by a caregiver to an infant. As an infant transitions into adulthood, the level of attachment provided by their caregivers can determine their ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle associated with relationships, social, and behavior skills. A criterion sampling method was used to identify six participants, via social media, to determine who met the criteria of being an African American woman between the ages of 21 and 55, heterosexual, and in a monogamous relationship. Inductive coding analyzed the data, which revealed raw data to develop themes of parental attachment, romantic partnerships, and parent influence related to the research questions. Overall, this project produced potential positive social change implications to social work practice pertaining to additional information on the importance of understanding how parental attachment and influence can impact a child's development. Results of the study displayed that two participants expressed satisfaction with their father. Five participants expressed dissatisfaction with their mother and how that experience may have had an influence in their history of choosing a romantic partner. However, all participants expressed that they believe that their parents may have had an impact on their ability to choose a romantic partner.
