I study the impact of mandatory environmental disclosure regulations on environmental alliances between firms. Such alliances, which pool resources for impactful environmental innovation, represent a crucial strategy for addressing sustainability challenges beyond individual firm capacities. Using data on strategic alliances and the staggered global introduction of environmental disclosure regulations, I document a notable decline in forming new environmental alliances following the mandates, especially when the regulations significantly enhance public information availability. The effect is also more pronounced when companies have stronger signaling incentives. Furthermore, changes in environmental alliance characteristics suggest that with mandatory disclosures providing an alternate learning source, firms become less reliant on alliances for environmental insights. Despite the decrease in quantity, alliances formed post-regulation are associated with more green patents and environmentally friendly products, suggesting a shift in focus towards fewer but more innovation-driven alliances. Overall, this paper sheds light on how regulations for mandatory environmental disclosures affect corporate strategic alliances and their subsequent innovation outcomes, enhancing our understanding of such regulatory changes' broader implications on strategic corporate decision-making.
