The support of mental health and career excellence in elite athletes is a growing societal issue. Athletic identity, career engagement, and mental well-being represent three primary constructs associated with holistic athlete development that have been associated with performance and psychological outcomes in elite athletes. Professional athletes represent a unique and hard-to-reach sub-population within the elite athletic community, and little research pertaining to athletic identity, career engagement, or mental well-being has been produced. To this point, career development and psychological well-being in the elite athlete context have been examined along two independent lines of inquiry. Grounded in holistic athletic career theory, this quantitative correlational-predictive investigation examined if, and to what extent, professional athlete's athletic identity and career engagement predict mental well-being in North America. Convenience sampling was used to survey 71 professional athletes currently active in the sports of baseball, football, and ice hockey in North America. It was found that professional athlete's athletic identity and career engagement significantly predicted mental well-being, F(2,68) = 12.532, R2 = .269, p ≤ .001. Furthermore, both athletic identity (β = -.280, p = .009) and career engagement (β = .432, p ≤ .001) added significantly to the prediction model. The current investigation contributes a previously undocumented positive predictive relationship between professional athlete's career engagement and mental well-being to the literature. Such insights support the development of new lines of inquiry to utilize career engagement strategies to support the psychological functioning and well-being of elite athletes.
