This paper is comprised of two separate manuscripts which converge on the topic of pregnancy decision-making, or people's process of making decisions about their pregnancy options in the midst of an unintended pregnancy. In the first chapter, I introduce the Pregnancy Decision-Making Model (PDMM), an innovative and comprehensive model that incorporates interdisciplinary and intersectional perspectives into the process of a pregnant person's decision-making process. The model posits that three outcome variables, pregnancy decision (e.g., the decision to terminate a pregnancy, place a child for adoption, or become a parent) and decisional certainty and satisfaction, are predicted by four evaluation factors: evaluation of capital, evaluation of values, evaluation of narratives, and evaluation of access, in addition to the moderating effect of social influences. This model is intended to inspire future research into psychological, structural, and cultural factors that influence pregnancy decision-making, and to contribute to the psychological literature on reproductive justice.In the second chapter, I describe an empirical study that adapts variables described in the PDMM to evaluate pregnancy decision-making for women who have a mental health condition. Using a mixed methods approach, I tested a model in which women's pregnancy decision is predicted by their psychological distress and parenting self-efficacy. I utilized qualitative data to identify lay beliefs about mental health and pregnancy and results were consistent with a mediation model in which lay beliefs mediated the relationship between psychological distress and likelihood of choosing abortion. I then discuss relevant implications for mental and physical health practitioners who are working with women with mental health conditions, especially those who are evaluating their reproductive futures.
