Fredrik Sixten is a prolific contemporary Swedish composer, having composed nearly two hundred works for choir. He has a demonstrated interest in large-scale, choral-orchestral music set in historical forms, having written four Passion settings (one for each of the Gospels), a Requiem Mass, a Christmas oratorio, another oratorio based on the life of Martin Luther, an opera, and several other multimovement works (Stabat mater, Gloria, Magnificat, and Lux Mundi). A defining characteristic of Sixten's music is his conscious effort and intention of avoiding the development of a signature "style" in his music. He achieves this using contrasting elements not only within individual pieces, but also among different compositions in his catalogue. This technique can clearly be seen in his large-scale, choralorchestral works set in historical forms. This study will 1) present a biographical sketch of Sixten's life and career from 1962-2017; 2) describe in detail the three early large-scale, choral-orchestral works set in historical forms from 2004-2015 (En svensk Markuspassion, Requiem, and Ett svenskt Juloratorium); and 3) demonstrate how Sixten uses contrasting elements in his creation of these works. The primary research method used for the study was a series of interviews with the composer, Swedish conductors who premiered the works explored, and various Swedish musicians and publishers associated with Sixten both personally and professionally. Swedish musicologists and folk music scholars were consulted for the identification and provenance of the various folk melodies Sixten employs in these three pieces.
