Private equity transactions are commonplace in the South African commercial landscape. Private equity capital refers to capital that investors invest directly into the equity of private companies, rather than capital traded on a publicly quoted exchange. According to Cassim Motala (Personal interview, 2012), "Private Equity is an asset class consisting of investments in privately held operating companies. These investments are typically in the form of venture capital, growth capital, mezzanine finance, leveraged buyouts and distressed debt investments".
