The purpose of this dissertation is two-fold: First, to outline and develop a listening program for teaching Chinese music at the elementary school level. Second, to utilize a module of formative evaluation which ensures content validity and instructional effectiveness. This listening program uses a multi-media instructional mode to facilitate student learning. Teaching materials include Teacher's guide, student materials (information sheet, one hundred slides, cassette tape, illustrations, quizzes, interactive activities, follow-up activities, and pre-test/post-test materials). Unit 1: The Historical Background of Chinese Music was administered in four different elementary schools in both the United States and Taiwan. There was positive response at all levels to this teaching package. The utilization of a formative module design for curriculum development provided the framework for a successful production of a music program. Close attention was given to the developmental stage of this teaching package. Every step in this process was observed, evaluated and revised in order to ensure an effective instructional unit. The dissertation includes a discussion of the problems raised and their resolution. The results of this study demonstrate that these well-designed teaching materials are effective for the teaching of Chinese music to elementary school children. The formative module could also be applied to other areas of music education with equal result. The dissertation includes a bibliography, discography and suggestions for further study.
