Catholic Charismatic covenant communities are pioneering spiritual phenomena in the Caribbean twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The birth and unique development of both Zion Community and Living Water Community in the island of Trinidad in 1980 makes it a promising and rich space for practical theological investigation. A hermeneutical, phenomenologically-oriented methodology coupled with an empirical theological method offers a means of generating fresh pneumatological insight. This is especially the case given that these communities are situated within the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR). The global CCR specifically understands that these communities have been developed and sustained through the ongoing action of the Holy Spirit. As such, they are covenant communities and particularly lively spaces in which the role of the Holy Spirit might be better understood and more adequately theologized. Members of Zion and Living Water communities receive ongoing spiritual formation within their community contexts, yet as such they must be seen individually and communally, within their covenant communities as well as in wider social and ecclesial communities. Thomas Groome's practical theological method offers a means to theologize these relationships. His approach offers a means of engaging the Christian Story and Vision in light of these communities, thus providing a locus theologicus, moving beyond proclamation to demonstration and culminating with conversation, in line with charismatic spirituality and practical theological reflection.
