This dissertation critically examines literary and cultural representations of cross-cultural encounters between international tourists and sex workers in Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. In my study of a variety of media, ranging from canonical novels, contemporary films, experimental performances to blogs, I argue that interracial and cross-cultural relationships between sex workers and their clients are presented as foundational fictions for the neoliberal world order. These works expose the ways in which the sex tourism industry upholds the afterlives of slavery and colonialism, and call for a reevaluation of the industry and its treatment of the sex workers who play a pivotal role in the nation's economies. In this dissertation, therefore, I argue that contemporary fictions from the American tropics not only portray sex workers as reproductive laborers that sustain the national economy, but that they also play a key role in the intellectual imagination of the nation and its position in the global marketplace.
