At the time of the project, obesity management in primary care is lacking due to numerous factors such as length of appointment visits, decreased knowledge about the disease process, and reduced number of primary care providers in the area. Obesity is a complex multifactorial disease process, and addressing all the needs is undervalued. Current research shows that increasing BMI can harm psychosocial health, such as decreased self-esteem, decreased social interactions, and increased depression. Not only does psychosocial impact happen, but research has also shown that functional status declines due to increased pain and reduced activity levels. According to Patrick et al. (2004), assessing the quality of life during obesity management visits will help improve the overall quality of life for the patient as the provider can focus on specific areas where a patient might be scoring low. Addressing the areas with low scoring will help a provider concentrate on those areas where a patient feels more of a negative impact due to their obesity. The provider can develop a care plan suited to the specific patients' needs and, in turn, improve the patients quality of life scores and function. All these factors of quality of life need to be well documented and assessed to improve the quality of care to patients. This project has helped determine the importance of evaluating Health-Related Quality of life and showing data that supports how a decrease in weight can have a positive impact.
