The prevalence of depression has experienced a notable increase in recent years, particularly in the years following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 induces cerebral inflammation, which triggers the production of cytokines potentially associated with depression. Another potential impact is reduced outdoor sun exposure, as sunshine is considered a beneficial component in preventing and treating depression. The objective of this project was to instruct individuals between the ages of 18 and 65, who self-reported experiencing mild to moderate depression, on the importance of engaging in one hour of safe sunshine exposure per day for a duration of four weeks by measuring the Patient Health Questionnaire Nine (PHQ-9) before and after the intervention to assess the degree of improvement in the condition. The quantitative, quasi-designed study included 28 participants and used the independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test to analyze the data. The results showed that one hour of daily sun exposure reduced depression by 36% in PHQ-9 scores. Hence, it could possibly be beneficial for healthcare providers to integrate daylight exposure into their routine health education programs to enhance the well-being or mitigate individuals suffering from depression.
