Thesis (M.A.)--University of Toronto (Canada), 1994.
Includes bibliographical references
This thesis examines the infusion of feminism into social work theory and practice, as evidenced by the professional activities of feminist social workers active in the area of wife assault. Points of congruency and sources of tension are identified. Finally, the educational needs of feminist social workers are considered. The research methodology is qualitative. Interviews with seven women form the basis for the study. The contexts of feminism, social work, and their respective historical and contemporary responses to violence against women are explored. I demonstrate that, while feminism enhances their social work skills and analysis of social problems, the women in this study encounter difficulties in their work with issues of diversity and differences among women. I argue that social work education does not adequately prepare students for the issues confronting them. The challenge for social work education is to integrate a critical analysis of social relations into the curriculum.
