It is pivotal to identify determinants that influenced whether individuals adopted protective behavior amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined the influence of information sources on beliefs and risk perceptions on whether an individual engaged in protective behaviors in a U.S. sample population. A theoretical framework was developed incorporating the following factors: utilization of formal and informal information about health guidelines, perceived severity of the pandemic and vulnerability to the pandemic, extent of conspiracy beliefs, and political ideology. The protective behaviors to be predicted were intentions to wear masks and get vaccinated. Data were collected from 742 participants via an Amazon Mechanical Turk online survey and analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling. Formal information was positively associated with perceived severity (β = 0.70, p < 0.001) and negatively with conspiracy beliefs (β = -0.48, p < 0.001). Conversely, informal information was associated negatively with perceived severity (β = -0.11, p < 0.001) and positively with conspiracy beliefs (β = 0.24, p < 0.001). Perceived severity was positively associated with intentions to wear masks (β = 0.43, p < 0.001), while conspiracy beliefs were inversely associated with vaccination intentions (β = -0.16, p < 0.001). Formal information was positively associated with liberalism (β = 0.53, p < 0.001), which in turn was positively associated with vaccination intentions. No direct associations were found between different sources of information and perceived vulnerability. Intention to wear masks was positively associated with vaccination intentions (β = 0.20, p < 0.001). Individuals favoring formal information about health guidelines and espousing more liberal views demonstrated higher compliance with vaccination. However, conspiracy beliefs can compromise vaccination adherence. Individuals who perceived greater severity were more likely to engage in mask-wearing. Individuals expressing a willingness to wear masks exhibited a tendency towards vaccine compliance.
