However, in terms of the establishment of a new economic order characterized by open markets and free trade, globalization began in the 1940s with the establishment of new institutions such the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the precursor to WTO, based on the belief that global integration is more likely to bring about peace and prosperity to all.
