ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to examine the human behavioral factors related to a person being susceptible to social engineering and to determine if it was possible to include these behaviors in an Information Awareness Training Assessment Tool which assess a person’s overall susceptibility to becoming the victim of a cybercrime in a more precise manner than what is currently accomplished using the existing Information Awareness Training Assessment tools. This study began with the assumption that human behavioral traits notably influenced susceptibility to social engineering. Humans are complex, multi-faceted beings placed in a position where they need to be able to make information security decisions while sometimes being influenced by their current state of mind, which is influenced by behavioral characteristics. Overcoming the behavioral influence on information security decision-making is essential for defending against social engineers and how they develop new attack methods. The first step in overcoming behavioral factors related to information security decision-making is identifying which behavioral factors affect the decision-making process and to find a way to measure the impact they have on a person’s susceptibility. This study developed a new information awareness training assessment model that evaluated a participant’s susceptibility by including questions related to the 128 behavioral traits and social media usage factors that influence the information security decision-making process. Through the development of a new susceptibility algorithm that incorporated behavioral factors, social media usage factors, and the results of a dynamic/adaptable information awareness training questionnaire, this study showed that behavioral characteristics could be evaluated when measuring a person’s susceptibility to becoming a victim of cybercrime, like social engineering. Furthermore, this study showed that when including the behavioral and social media usage factors into the process of assessing susceptibility, it was possible to more precisely gauge a person’s potential risk of becoming a victim of a cybercrime.
