A correlational and multiple regression analysis assessed the actual and predictive relationships between health beliefs, perceptions, and impacts to recreational triathletes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the theoretical constructs of the Health Belief Model, relationships were analyzed in explaining and predicting a health action during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, "What effect did age, gender, competition level, years of experience, perceived infection threat level, and lifestyle impact factors score have on the likelihood of participation in a recreational triathlon during the COVID-19 pandemic?" Sixty-four recreational triathletes from across the world responded to a 15-question survey link posted in Facebook groups. 46.9% of the recreational triathletes surveyed reported they definitely would have participated. A correlation analysis concluded that their COVID-19 infection threat from course support and the COVID-19 impact on their fitness level were most related to their actual likelihood of participation. While results from a multiple regression analysis concluded their competition level and COVID-19 infection threat from airborne contamination were most related to their predicted likelihood of participation during the pandemic. The determined best regression model equation explained 57.5% of their predicted outcome, with competition level and perceived infection threat level being the only significant predictors. Future research may better explain this health risk versus health reward decision when recreational triathletes face choosing between their health and their drive to compete.
