The socio-political history of Myanmar has resulted in mass displacement of millions of refugees. In addition to pre-migratory stressors, refugee populations face unique mental health challenges in the host country. This phenomenological mixed methods study aims to explore the presence of and applicability of the ICD-11 and DSM-5 criteria for prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and the essence of disordered grieving in a Burmese refugee population in Central Indiana which has one of the largest populations of Burmese refugees in the U.S. With increased globalization there is a greater recognition of the importance of culturally congruent diagnostic tools and interventions to improve early diagnosis, prevention, and improve treatment outcomes in vulnerable populations. The results of this study will contribute to the pool of knowledge developing around the efficacy of the PG-13 tool for prolonged grief disorder, provide a better understanding of the grieving responses of Burmese refugees, and will contribute to access of the already established partnerships in the area to culturally appropriate tools for assisting with refugee mental health.
