Mangrove ecosystems are widespread in tropical and subtropical coastal regions, and are critically important for supporting local livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and providing many ecosystem services. Yet mangroves have in many places been significantly degraded. Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) has been used across the globe as an approach to managing natural resources (including mangroves) by involving local communities in decision-making and management in a collective manner. This dissertation investigates three related issues: (1) the process of establishing CBNRM in coastal communities; (2) the benefits gained and shared by community households from mangrove forests that are protected by CBNRM; and (3) the roles of community leaders in successfully implementing CBNRM to restore and protect mangrove forests. I selected three communities on the Andaman coast in southern Thailand, where CBNRM had been used to successfully restore and protect mangrove forests, to use as case studies. This research involved extensive fieldwork; I collected data using semi-structured interviews, structured interviews (survey questionnaires), and observations. The principal sources of data were from 16 community leaders and 150 heads of households in the three communities. Additionally, I collected data by interviewing external stakeholders and by analyzing relevant documents. I analyzed the data using coding, descriptive statistical analysis, and an interpretive understanding of the socio-cultural contexts of the communities. My results revealed multiple insights about communities that have used CBNRM to protect and restore mangrove forests. First, I found that in all three coastal communities, CBNRM was established by the community members, with support from external stakeholders. Second, I found that the community households gained multiple benefits from mangrove forests that were protected through CBNRM. These benefits included provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural ecosystem services that supported households both in terms of income and subsistence. Finally, I found that community leaders played various important roles in the CBNRM process, including encouraging community members to participate in CBNRM, facilitating the establishment of the CBNRM governance structure, managing conflicts, and coordinating with external stakeholders. Collectively, the findings from this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the real-world applications of CBNRM.
