This study ascertains the relationship between acculturation and mental ability pattern for Chinese Americans. Chinese Americans generally perform better on quantitative than on verbal measures. One factor in this pattern is the group's culture. To the extent that the culture changes, that is, acculturation occurs, corresponding changes in the mental ability pattern may also occur. In order to examine the above relationship, Chinese young adolescents attending schools in Sacramento (n = 193) and San Francisco (n = 126) served as subjects. They were administered two acculturation questionnaires: one, a demographic-behavioral measure and the other, an attitudinal measure. In addition, the subjects' scores for various mental abilities were obtained from school officials and were those of achievement batteries. For both the Sacramento and San Francisco samples, various hypotheses and most corollaries were confirmed. To begin with, quantitative scores are higher than verbal scores for Chinese Americans. Also, acculturation is multidimensional and selective. The multidimensionality is demonstrated by the derivation of multiple dimensions within separate demographic-behavioral and attitudinal scales of acculturation; the selectivity is illustrated with descriptions of different behaviors and attitudes undergoing different amounts of change and of behaviors changing more than attitudes. The relationship between acculturation and mental ability pattern for Chinese Americans is characterized by acculturation being generally negatively related to quantitative-verbal differentials. Moreover, some dimensions of acculturation are negatively related to quantitative-verbal differentials whereas other dimensions are not related to the differentials, and demographic-behavioral dimensions are more negatively related to the differentials than are attitudinal dimensions. Although similarities, such as in the confirmation of various hypotheses and corollaries, exist between Sacramento and San Francisco, city differences are also evident. San Francisco has smaller quantitative-verbal differentials. Also, Sacramento is more concerned with general dimensions of acculturation and with traditional and cultural qualities. These differences, as well as the similarities, are discussed in terms of their theoretical and methodological implications, including the existence of universal versus sample-specific dimensions of acculturation and the differential impact of acculturation on mental ability pattern.
