Cybersecurity threats and successful breaches are constantly increasing which impacts an organization's financial risk. Organizational financial priorities can fluctuate based on business objectives though a successful data breach can have lasting effects. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to identify factors or events that were influential to security leaders in the prioritization of investments to mitigate cybersecurity breaches within organizations that were guided by the principles of transference from the Coase theory. The research was conducted using previously validated instruments (ATC-IB and HIMSS) through an online questionnaire. The 55 participants were targeted from a cybersecurity LinkedIn group where members have enterprise experience and knowledge in the field. participating respondents were between 18 and 60 years old, worked in the U.S., and had experience and/or a degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or Security. The findings of this research study indicate weak correlations between cybersecurity incidents or breaches and factors that impact organizational budgets. The Spearman correlation between the factors Cost and Breach showed no significance (r=.000, p = .998). Conversely, the correlation between the factors Cost and Type shows no significant relationship (r = .213, p = .123) and Cost and Security Solutions were the same at (r = .244. p = .073). Existing literature and the result of this study indicate further research is required to develop an appropriate financial model that ties cybersecurity factors to the prioritization and allocation of budgets for organizations.
