Work-life balance has been a popular topic among researchers and workplace professionals. Many studies have indicated that lower work-life balance not only result in lower job and life satisfaction, but negatively contributes to individual physical and mental health, engagement, while increasing chances of burnout. Lack of work-life balance has also been linked to lower levels of job performance. Job performance is of interest to almost all organizations, as individual performance directly connects to the overall success of the company. As companies seek to quantify and usually improve individual performance, measuring job performance itself has evolved from task performance (i.e., job knowledge, organization skills, and efficiency) to include contextual performance (i.e., effort, organizational conscientiousness, personal characteristics, interpersonal/relationship skills). Another important consideration in studying both work-life balance and job performance is investigating the strength of the boundaries between the domains of 'work' and 'life'. The flexibility of these boundaries is linked with how balanced an employee feels, and therefore potentially how well they perform. Those with more flexible boundaries are often referred to as integrators, and individuals with more rigid boundaries are called segmentors; these two types exist on the 'segmentation-integration' continuum. One of the reasons boundaries have become more flexible is the advancement of modern work-anywhere technologies. The IT industry, who is responsible for producing and maintaining these technologies, is an understudied area. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between work-life balance and job performance in the IT Industry while controlling for where an individual is on the segmentation-integration continuum (i.e., how flexible their boundaries between domains are). The IT industry was selected due to the fact that technology itself has been at the center of many discussions about work-life balance, boundaries, and performance. The IT industry also has exponentially rapid growth and unique job demands. When considering technology as its own industry, and not just a tool used by other industries, there is a gap in research that needs to be investigated. Utilizing an anonymous online survey which measured perceived work-life balance, job performance, and boundary flexibility, this study aimed to take a closer look at those working in IT. Due to a statistical reliability issue, the question of the relationship between work-life balance and job performance in IT remains to be answered. The Job Performance Scale could not be used to determine significant relationships, because it had a Cronbach's alpha of ⍺ = 0.54, which is unacceptable. Therefore, the study was pivoted to analyze work-life balance and boundary flexibility. Results indicated that employees who tend to integrate, i.e., those with flexible boundaries, have higher work-life balance than those who have a tendency to segment their work and home lives. Other results indicate that childfree workers feel less work-life balance, and that women felt less inclined to show flexibility. There were also a number of gender differences in the results, where women were shown to be lower on flexibility in their workplaces and higher on flexibility in their home domains; the opposite was indicated for men. These results show preliminary indication that the IT industry is a unique area to study. As the IT industry shows no signs of slowing down further into the 21st century, these studies could be useful for continued recruitment and retention of those within the industry. Limitations of this study are discussed, as well as various recommendations for future studies.
