Becoming a parent is among the most universal roles in the human experience. While there is abundant research on parenting and what makes one a "good" parent, research does not typically focus on how being a good parent may affect a parent's experience of burnout (Roskam et al., 2021). Burnout, another widely researched concept, refers to feelings of exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment (Maslach et al., 2001). It is possible that parents who experience burnout are those that strive to be the best parent possible and inevitably lack the personal resources to do so. Personal resources that contribute to one's experience of burnout include emotional competence, a term born out of the emotional intelligence research (Brasseur et al., 2013). Emotional competence is essential for how we respond to ourselves and our own needs and how we respond to others. Moreover, being a parent involves taking care of one's child, and maintaining a relationship with the other parent, otherwise known as the co-parenting relationship. The goal of this study is to assess the relationship among emotional competence, the co-parenting relationship, and parental burnout to better understand how these variables contribute to parents' experiences of burnout. Support was provided for the relationship between emotional competence and parental burnout. Individuals who reported higher emotional competence were more likely to demonstrate lower levels of parental burnout. Within this sample, no evidence was provided for the relationship between co-parenting and the other study variables, emotional competence, and parental burnout.
