The current study addresses how sensitive parenting and parenting socialization behaviors foster children's gratitude development. Sensitive parenting may enhance empathy, and, in turn, gratitude. Parents who are more sensitive to their children's needs may engage in more tailored gratitude socialization behaviors, strengthening the association between these behaviors and children's gratitude over time. These two pathways are likely complementary, each affecting the development of gratitude in children. Hypotheses were tested using longitudinal data from the Raising Grateful Children Study. Though neither parental styles nor behaviors were significant independently, results showed marginal significance for an interaction between them such that parents who engaged in both had children who showed the greatest increases in gratitude over time. Empathy was not a significant mediator between parental sensitivity and gratitude, despite significant associations between parental sensitivity, empathy, and gratitude. These results show promise for future studies into the role of parents in children's developing gratitude.
