Currently, millions of Americans own pets (i.e., companion animals), and animals are being used in various clinical settings to alleviate distress. Results on how companion animals impact mental health have been mixed and unclear. Reasons for this discrepancy are that the human-companion animal (HCA) bond is not clearly defined and research has inconsistently assessed human-pet attachment as pet ownership or other measures that are not necessarily validated. For practical and clinical reasons, it is also important to understand what types of people are more likely to bond to pets in order for clinical work to be more effective. Therefore, Phase 1 of this study first sought to clearly define the HCA bond by factor analyzing four commonly used, reliable measures: Lexington Pet Attachment Scale (Johnson, Garrity, & Stallones, 1992), Pet Attachment and Life Impact Scale (Cromer & Barlow, 2013), Companion Animal Bonding Scale (Poresky, Hendrix, Mosier, & Samuelson, 1987), and Pet Attachment Questionnaire (Zilcha-Mano, Mikulancer, & Shaver, 2011a). The HCA bond scale was found to be a five-factor model: Pet Provisions, Emotional Bond, Physical Proximity, Personal Growth, and Pet Care. Phase 2 of this study sought to define what types of characteristics of pet owners make it more likely to bond to their pets using the HCA bond scale developed in Phase 1. Data were collected from community members and undergraduate students in a diverse multiethnic college (n = 304 for Phase 1; n = 196 for Phase 2). Four human characteristics were hypothesized to be positively correlated with the HCA bond: dissociation, history of childhood trauma, personality traits (Openness, Conscientiousness, and Neuroticism), and avoidant attachment styles. These characteristics were measured by the Dissociation Experiences Scale (Bernstein & Putman, 1986), The Exposure to Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (Bremner, Bolus, & Mayer, 2007), The Big Five Inventory-4a (John, Naumann, & Soto, 2008), and the Experiences in Close Relationships-Short form scale (Wei, Russell, Mallinckrodt, & Vogel, 2007), respectively. While dissociation and history of trauma were not found to be significantly related to the overall HCA bond, both were found to be significantly correlated with the Physical Proximity factor of the HCA bond. On the other hand, personality characteristics, such as Openness and Conscientiousness, as well as anxious attachment styles to humans were found to be significantly related to the overall HCA bond. These results suggest that in addition to using a reliable, parsimonious measure, more research should focus on interactions between human characteristics, the HCA bond, and mental health.
