Pets occupy significant roles in the lives of many contemporary pet owners. The meaningfulness of relationships between pet owners and their pets has been increasingly acknowledged in recent decades, and yet the implications of pet loss have been less considered. With approximately 377.8 million companion animals in the United States, most with shorter life expectancies than humans, the number of pet owners likely to experience grief as a result of pet loss is immense. In addition, animal health care staff experiencing stress associated with the loss of patients is also likely to be significant. Psychologists working in animal health care settings can provide education, support services, and therapy to pet owners, as well as training and support services to professionals and staff. This dissertation reviews literature on the human-animal bond, health benefits of pet ownership, and grief and loss. The findings of a comprehensive needs assessment and program evaluation are presented and followed by novel program recommendations for the role of psychologists in animal health care and related settings.
