There is a large amount of research on job satisfaction and its relationship to strong human resource practices. This study focuses on the relationship between the educational background of the Human Resources Directors of Social Service agencies and job satisfaction. The study measures the job satisfaction between two social service agencies, one with an MSW (Master of Social Work) and the other agency with a non-MSW in the HR Director position. The study uses social exchange theory and person-environment fit theory from Industrial psychology as the basis for the study. A social worker has unique education, including empowerment theory, strengths-based perspective, and human behavior in social environment. The JSS, developed by Paul E. Spector (1985) was sent to six hundred sixteen employees, sixty-nine employees with an MSW, and five hundred forty-seven with a non-MSW HR Director. The employees with an MSW HR Director had a higher overall mean job satisfaction score. The difference in mean scores between the MSW and non-MSW groups was statically significant at .004 at the .05 confidence level. The JSS is comprised of nine subscales and there is a statistically significant difference in all the subscale scores, expect pay between the two groups. If having an MSW in an HR Director position positively impacts job satisfaction, agencies may want to reevaluate resources and strategically place an MSW in the HR Director role for retention reasons and assistance with ethics, values, and social justice in agency policymaking. No other study of this nature was found during an EBSCO search, and the results beseech more research in this area.
