Communication barriers are one of the challenges limited or non-English-speaking immigrants face in the United States. The inability of persons with limited or non-existent written or spoken English proficiency to communicate during essential services, including healthcare services, may lead to undesirable outcomes that healthcare organizations must prioritize. This qualitative case study explored what healthcare professionals do to ensure that policies and procedures are strengthened to provide healthcare services to patients with limited or non-existent written or spoken English proficiency to reduce medical errors. The study used the case study design method to ensure an in-depth understanding of communication barriers. Three research questions were explored to support the purpose of the study. A survey developed using SurveyMonkey, was used to collect data from healthcare professionals in the United States from a LinkedIn group. The survey was open for fifteen days with specific instructions outlining the selection of response criteria. Data were collected from 75 participants; however, 26 survey responses were selected for analysis based on the selection criteria. Data were analyzed using the thematic data analysis approach, using NVivo 14 software. Four themes that aligned with the three research questions were generated. Based on the themes generated, the findings revealed a rise in miscommunication between English-speaking healthcare professionals and patients with limited or non-existent written or spoken English proficiency in the United States. The study concluded that miscommunication caused delays in service delivery, frustration, and dissatisfaction among healthcare professionals and patients. Patients were misdiagnosed and wrongly treated, which led to medical errors. The researcher recommended that healthcare leaders implement policies and procedures for using simple English, qualified medical interpreters and translators, and continuously training healthcare professionals on communication.
