Legislation surrounding the medical and recreational use of cannabis in the United States (US) has evolved rapidly in the last decade, leading to an increase in cannabis access, acceptance, and use. Given the popular stereotype that cannabis is associated with extreme sedentary behavior (c.f., "couch lock"), there are concerns that cannabis legalization may exacerbate the physical inactivity epidemic in the US. Yet despite these concerns, in recent years, there has been considerable public interest in the use of cannabis concurrently with exercise (e.g., running). Although the use of cannabis with exercise has received extensive media coverage, there is little empirical support for this behavior and, to date, the acute effects of cannabis on the subjective experience of exercise remain unclear. As such, in a 2 (within: exercise appointment) X 2 (between: cannabis condition) mixed design, the present study compared participants' experiences of exercise without cannabis to their experiences of exercise after acute ad libitum use of one of two commercially available cannabis flower products: a THC-dominant product (24% THC and 1% CBD) or a CBD-dominant product (1% THC and 20% CBD). Both the cannabis and non-cannabis exercise appointments involved a 30-minute bout of moderate-tovigorous intensity exercise on a treadmill. Treadmill speed and incline were personalized to participants' individual fitness levels and were held constant across the two exercise appointments. Participants (N = 42) were regular cannabis users between the ages of 21 and 39 years (M = 30.81, SD = 4.72). Although participants reported more positive affect, dissociation, enjoyment, and runner's high symptoms during their cannabis (vs. non-cannabis) exercise appointment, they also reported more exertion and breathlessness. Pain levels did not differ between the cannabis and non-cannabis exercise appointments. These effects appeared to depend, in part, on cannabinoid content; there was a larger difference in dissociation and enjoyment - and a smaller difference in exertion - between the cannabis and non-cannabis exercise appointment among participants in the CBD (vs. THC) condition. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the acute effects of commercially available cannabis on subjective responses to exercise in a controlled laboratory environment. Our findings suggest that, among regular cannabis users, smoking or vaporizing cannabis flower prior to exercise may lead to increases in both positive (e.g., enjoyment) and negative (e.g., exertion) aspects of the subjective exercise experience. Research using diverse samples, exercise modalities, and methodologies is needed to establish the generalizability of these findings.
