This study considered factors that contribute to rising diabetes rates and examined the relationships among several variables, including the role that culture plays in dispensing and the utilization of health services. The incidence of diabetes is increasing at alarming rates, but the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that type 2 diabetes, which can often be forestalled by dietary regimens, affects far more African American women than any other group in terms of disability, morbidity, and mortality. Data covering the years 1985-1995 were extracted from the Diabetes Surveillance Report 1999, compiled by the CDC. These statistics reflected associated comorbidities arising from diabetes among African American women. Correlation and regression analyses showed the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes related to both diabetes rates and diabetes-related disability rates. Diabetes death rates and diabetes-related cardiovascular deaths showed an inverse relation to the occurrence of diabetes rates among African American women. To curb the increases of diabetes among African American women, the study suggests that lifestyle changes, targeted treatment, management regimens, behavior modification, and concerted public health efforts, such as implementing community-wide health promotion and intervention strategies, should be implemented through the collaboration of federal, state, and local government agencies with community-based organizations.
