This thesis explores shifts in power through subverting prescribed gender binaries within a selection of Shakespeare's sonnets and Shakespeare's plays Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice. Focusing on societal expectations surrounding gender versus identity, this thesis highlights variations in experience and examines how Shakespeare's characters pursue alternative expressions of gender to achieve otherwise unattainable status or influence on those around them. Referencing Judith Butler's Gender Trouble, this thesis considers both The Sonnets and two of Shakespeare's plays as representative of fluid gender expression and gender-based power dynamics. This thesis views the selected works through a nonrestrictive and nonbinary lens as it builds upon ongoing discussions surrounding the queer presence in Shakespeare's works. This study considers expected gender performance to display how Shakespeare's characters purposefully subvert those expectations. The figures found within The Sonnets and selected plays share a desire to perform outside of the restriction of their prescribed gender binary to achieve their desires or pursue their passion. This thesis questions the motivations behind this subversion and considers how cognizant Shakespeare's characters may be of the shifts of power they experience while performing an alternate gender.
