Consumers do not make decisions in a vacuum. Various factors have been documented to influence their perceptions and behaviors. This doctoral dissertation aims to explore some of the most significant factors related to people's lives, how they influence consumer decisions, and the corresponding psychological mechanisms. Specifically, the dissertation starts with the impact of social norms on consumer decisions, then moves to social norms and consumer ethics, and lastly focuses on consumer moral decision-making.The dissertation proposal consists of three progressive chapters. Chapter 1 explores the impact of social norms on consumer decisions. Specifically, by focusing on the cultural dimension of power distance belief (PDB), this chapter unveils how individuals' acceptance of hierarchy intersects with their perception of resource scarcity to influence their propensity towards future planning. Through innovative mixed-method studies and a moderated-mediation model, shedding light on how cultural nuances and self-efficacy intertwine to shape consumer response in various future planning contexts.Based on Chapter 1, Chapter 2 delves into the impact of another social norms dimension -collectivism and its interaction with uncertainty on consumers' moral behaviors. Through a series of experimental studies spanning diverse moral contexts, it establishes a moderated-mediation model, highlighting the mitigating role of individualism social norms in attenuating the negative impact of uncertainty on moral decision-making processes.Based on Chapter 2, Chapter 3 will shift the gear to examine the antecedents of consumer moral perception. Central to this exploration is the examination of frontline employees' (FLEs) efforts, encapsulated within the narrative of FLE effort (FEN). this chapter uncovers the dual route mechanisms through which FEN influences consumer responses, shedding light on its dual effects on both FLE and firm evaluations. Moreover, it offers valuable insights into the moderating effects of communication strategies, delineating how varying degrees of effort emphasis and recognition cues shape consumer perceptions and evaluations.Collectively, these chapters advance the understanding of the dynamics of social norms and consumer ethics in consumer decision-making. By bridging theoretical insights with empirical evidence, they offer valuable contributions to both literature and practical implications for businesses and policymakers navigating the complex landscape of consumer ethics in an ever-evolving global marketplace.
