Population diversity in the United States continues to evolve from primarily White to include a more diverse mix of race, ethnicity, age, education, language, socio-economic status, customs, values, norms, and lived experiences. The population of registered nurses (RNs) is not diversifying at the same rate as the patient population. Healthcare teams must be able to develop trust and understanding with patients in their differences from, as well as their similarities to, their caregivers. To care for patients in ways that contribute to healthcare outcomes without bias, registered nurses (RNs) are well-positioned to practice and to continually develop their skills in culturally competent patient care. Delivering Culturally Competent Patient Care: A Case Study of Registered Nurses explored how RNs working in a public, urban healthcare system in the Midwest define and deliver culturally competent patient care, and how they say their employer can support development of greater proficiency in such care. Through semi-structured, individual interviews with a convenience sample of RNs, data were collected and analyzed to reveal strong support for a common definition of culturally competent care and expansion of educational opportunities.RNs believed elevating cultural competence efforts to reflect best practice would improve proficiency in connecting with the patient as a whole person. Participants noted strengths and weaknesses in the resources and tools available; they also made recommendations for enhanced support to deepen and broaden cultural competence in the RN ranks and throughout the organization.Further study could focus on measuring education program effectiveness, cost benefit, and impact on patient satisfaction. Beyond healthcare, this study could be applied in the fields of education and public safety where cultural competence is essential to achieving desired outcomes of communication, connection, and trust.
