This study explored how family business (FB) leaders nurture psychological ownership (PO) and successfully engage next-generation entrepreneurs who are prepared to lead the company through unanticipated external shocks. Reflecting on their respective experiences in navigating the chronic challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, generational owners/successors along with non-family successors of six U.S.-headquartered family enterprises shared their perspectives of their heritage, the founder's entrepreneurial imprint, their personal philosophies and leadership styles, their passions, their struggles and triumphs, their attitudes toward the business, and how the pandemic led to innovation, transformation, revenue growth, and accelerated succession. The study is guided by imprint theory as it applies to PO, along with transformation and complexity leadership theories to frame the traits and skills of entrepreneurs. As the FB implies overlapping roles, Bowen's Family Systems (psychological model) and the Three-Circle [business model] provide fundamentals in understanding potential succession detailers. The study found qualitative evidence of how these small to medium sized generational FBs continued their growth trajectory during the pandemic. Further, the study's recurring themes revealed high levels of PO, adaptive capacity, and accelerated succession in FBs where the family's entrepreneurial legacy and core values are embedded throughout the organizational culture. The study suggests new theory on the antecedents of entrepreneurial bridging (EB), which contributes to a strong organizational culture that is adaptive, synergistic, and proactively innovates during times of unanticipated crises and continuous change.
