This intensive study uses combined qualitative methods to explore the process of change within foster and adoptive families when foster or adopted children enter or exit the home. Also analyzed are the impacts inflicted upon the biological children when traumatized children are cared for within these families. This autoethnographic journey provides deeper exploration of the impacts of fostering and adopting from my direct perspective as a biological child who grew up within a family that fostered and adopted children throughout my adolescence. I also enhance the autoethnographic research with supplemental perspectives of others who grew up in similar families. The discussion analyzes the relationship between biological children and their family members through the changes that these families encounter. Family Stress Theory and Family Border Ambiguity explain the meanings these families place on their stressful situations and how border ambiguity is one of the leading causes of stress within the family. The research largely yielded positive feelings associated with being a part of foster/adopt families and mostly positive inter-familial relationships; even when personal and familial sacrifice and stress were considered.
