Given the structural changes within American society, an understanding of labeling theory is crucial. The acknowledgement of process by which individuals are categorized and treated in accordance to labels that are placed on them by the society at large illustrates the need to trace the classical, middle-range, and contemporary assumptions of labeling theory within the sociological perspective. The purpose of this research is to encourage changes in the future development of labeling theory and to illuminate avenues for future research on social problems such as crime, mental illness, and family violence. This research is a review of primary and secondary sources, which included books, journals, and articles. The research implicates that the foundation of labeling theory is strong and has a great depth of understanding in the process of human behavior, but lacks the understanding of general implications such as the laws in which define individuals as deviant. Which highlights the assumption that there is a connection between deviance and social control. While the critics main issues concern the fact that it does not clearly define its aims to explain the origin of deviant behavior or the reaction to labels, after a fully examination, it can be asserted that labeling theory aims to do both.
