The importance of love and work for psychological well-being has been established empirically. What is lacking is a theoretical structure that can accommodate both in a natural way. My colleagues and I have been studying adult love from an attachment-theoretical perspective. Bowlby's attachment theory postulates the existence of several interrelated behavioral systems. Attachment is the first system to emerge in development, and its function is to provide a haven of safety and a secure base for exploration. Exploration is the next system to emerge, and its function is to build competence, and a sense of competence, in interacting with the environment. Ainsworth identified three infant attachment styles and three corresponding exploration styles. Secure attachment was associated with relaxed and engaged exploration, while anxious/ambivalent attachment entailed preoccupation with the caregiver and little exploration, and avoidant attachment was accompanied by compulsive exploration in the service of avoiding the caregiver. In previous work, we identified three analogous adult attachment styles. For the present study, I conceptualized work as adult exploration and hypothesized the existence of three work styles analogous to the three infant exploration styles. Results of a survey study of adults are consistent with this prediction. Securely attached adults take a healthy approach to work, while anxious/ambivalent adult workers are distracted by attachment concerns, and avoidant adults use work to avoid social interaction. The results provide encouraging support for an attachment-theoretical approach to the study of love and work.
