This case study used archival video data to examine how the observable behaviors of professional coaching students aligned with the updated International Coaching Federation (ICF) core coaching competencies. This research also sought to understand the lived experiences of the student coaches and ascertain how prepared they felt to coach professional clients. Understanding was achieved through in-depth interviews with the student coaches. The research findings indicated that professional coaching students demonstrated a high number of behaviors in actions and words that align with the ICF competencies. Professional coaching students felt confident about working with clients based on factors such as their professional expertise, coaching experience, and the level of coaching supervision including the quality of feedback. Other findings include that student coaches held different approaches to various cultural contexts, varying thoughts about intuition, and adapted to online delivery for their engagements. Implications for coaching students and programs as well as organizations implementing coaching include that learning can be enhanced by viewing videos of others and self; cultural understanding and coaching different clients is important for coaches and clients; and organizations will benefit holistically through the training of internal coaches. The significance of this study is that it helps fill a gap in the coaching research regarding the use of video data to research coaching engagements, and adds to the research regarding coaching during Covid-19.
