In modern Tibetan society, the Chinese government is implementing an approach to the transformation of Tibetan culture, including architecture and interior design. This identity crisis of Tibetan architecture is a significant part of erasing Tibetan civilization. Most of the architecture in Tibetan urban areas is being forced to adopt Chinese state-driven practices so that there is no characteristic of Tibetan architecture and interior design of spaces. Local people are slowly losing their attachment and confidence to their cultural heritage. One consequence of this has been the erasure of ordinary Tibetans, both as individuals and as a collective. As articulated in Architecture and Identity by Chris Abel, the true and deeper function of architecture transcends the mere production of artifacts, instead explaining the original ways in which we perceive ourselves. Interior space serves as a medium for expressing cultural identity, embodying the sentiment that "Architecture is a non-verbal medium for the communication of values about ways of life, aesthetic aspirations, and cultural ideologies". This influence is not rooted in mere personal preference; rather, the interior serves as a reflective canvas that reinforces the user's social position, class, and cultural identity.Tibetan architecture has gained global recognition for its iconic monasteries and temples; however, its richness extends far beyond these renowned structures. A typical residential home in rural Tibet serves as a crucial embodiment of Tibetan architecture, offering a compelling narrative about the everyday realities of life. In this context, Tibetan interior spaces are not merely physical constructs but intricate expressions that delve into our identities, cultures, and the broader human experience. Amos Rapoport argues that house form is not simply the result of physical forces or causal factors but is the consequence of a whole range of socio-cultural factors. In this case, Tibetan homes reflect their cultural identity but also shape the individual in the building. In Lang, Desai, and Desai's book, "Architecture can effect changes, perhaps carried out unconsciously by people as part of everyday life." People's aesthetic judgments, tastes, and cultural practices are influenced unselfconsciously by the spaces surrounding them, as these spaces become an integral part of their daily existence. The interior space is a representation of who you are and at the same time, it shapes you as a cultural individual.The hypothesis posits that the traditional Tibetan domestic lifestyle serves as a manifestation of cultural identity. Within the confines of domestic spaces, the physical arrangement represents a tangible expression of the cultural, spiritual, and material aspects of Tibetan society. This thesis seeks to identify a set of design principles that can effectively mirror cultural identity in domestic living. This exploration is conducted through an examination of Tibetan vernacular homes and the analysis of contemporary successful case studies. The overarching goal of this thesis is to present an innovative solution to address the identity crisis prevalent in Tibetan domestic living within urban areas.
