Colleges are amid a mental health crisis with campuses seeing the highest rates of mental health disorders in over a decade. College nursing students stand out as particularly affected, experiencing elevated levels of anxiety, stress, and depression compared to the general student population. At the forefront of addressing this issue are college faculty, especially nursing faculty, who play a unique role in identifying and referring students with mental health (MH) needs due to their close interactions in smaller teaching-learning settings such as clinicals, simulations, and one-on-one validations. This research aimed to assess the perceived competency, knowledge, engagement, and fear levels of nursing faculty in supporting the MH of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students. Additionally, the study explored whether faculty members with prior MH training differed in these levels and investigated the resources identified by nursing faculty as most helpful in supporting BSN students' MH. Analysis of 63 survey responses from faculty employed at six large schools of nursing in the southeast, offering a BSN degree, revealed that prior MH training significantly influenced faculty's engagement levels. The findings highlight a need for tailored mental health training for nursing faculty. Furthermore, nursing faculty in this study displayed high levels of competence, engagement and knowledge and low levels of fear in supporting the BSN student's MH. These key findings contribute to a deeper understanding of nursing faculty's ability to provide MH support to students, highlighting the importance of targeted MH training. The results also prompt recommendations for future research aimed at developing a comprehensive approach to equip nursing faculty with effective MH training and interventions. Such efforts seek to empower student nurses with the tools necessary to support their own MH, enabling them to competently care for patients and communities.
