Introduction: In emergency departments (EDs), delays in communication can impact patient care and safety. An evaluation was conducted on the effectiveness of the Hands-Free Wireless Communication Device (HWCD) to address communication challenges in an ED. The study aimed to determine the HWCD's impact on ED throughput metrics and users' perceptions of its use in improving communication, quality of care, and workflow efficiency.Method: A descriptive quantitative design was used to collect data from 42 registered nurses (RNs) and patient care technicians (PCTs). The ED throughput data from Business Intelligence (BI) and users' perceptions data from three online surveys, including the Adapted User Perception (AUP), Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and System Usability Scale (SUS), were utilized.Results: The study showed a 10% improvement in door-to-room time post-implementation, meeting the project's goal. AUP communication and workflow efficiency sub-scores significantly improved (p ≤ .0001) for RNs and PCTs. System usability was moderate. PCTs scored significantly higher than RNs in various categories (p ≤ .001), warranting further exploration.Discussion: The study contributed to the literature by comprehensively examining the use and impact of the HWCD in the ED. The evaluation provided evidence of the HWCD's positive effects on user satisfaction, communication, workflow efficiency, quality of patient care, and door-to-room metric, emphasizing its potential to enhance clinical outcomes in healthcare.
