Inpatient falls present a significant challenge for hospitals globally, despite numerous studies aimed at identifying evidence-based interventions to mitigate the occurrence of falls. This quality improvement project considers the impact of implementing the Fall TIPS tool on fall rates per 1000 patient days within two high-acuity medical units over a six-week period at a 404-bed tertiary care hospital in Orlando, Florida. Using the Framework for Spread (FFS), the DNP QI Project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Fall TIPS tool in reducing falls among high-risk patients. The tool is a complementary intervention to the Morse Fall Scale (MFS) assessment tool. It offers tailored interventions based on risk factors such as fall history, medication side effects, mobility aid usage, unsteady gait, patient being tethered to equipment, and mental orientation. Results from this project indicate that utilizing the Fall TIPS tool alongside the MFS can significantly decrease inpatient falls and falls with injury. However, ensuring compliance with the usage among nurses and providing education to the patient and families on the selected interventions are crucial for successful implementation. Analysis of pre-implementation fall rates reveals a 57.53 percent decrease in falls for Cardiac Unit A and a 5.42 percent increase in falls for Cardiac Unit B. These findings underscore the importance of consistent implementation practices in achieving favorable outcomes.
