The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of certain behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia on familial caregivers and their feelings of distress and burden. Participants were individuals over the age of 18 who are familial caregivers of individuals with dementia and/or cognitive decline. The survey was disseminated via an online platform. A recruitment flyer was also shared throughout the community in the Northern California area to recruit respondents through snowball sampling. The survey consisted of a demographics form, the NPI-Q questionnaire, and the Zarit Burden Interview. This study used chi-square tests of independence, one-way between-subject ANOVAs, independent sample t-tests, a MANOVA, and correlation analyses to explore the associations between the dementia types, behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSDs), symptom frequency, symptom severity, caregiver distress, and caregiver feelings of burden. Due to the unequal distribution of participants in each dementia group, the categories for various analyses were collapsed into two groups, With and Without Alzheimer's, to represent the comparison between Alzheimer's and all other dementia types.
