This dissertation provides a historical and theological analysis of the fate of the unevangelized in recent evangelical theology. I argue that there is a disconnect between what most evangelicals claim (exclusivism) and what they believe (diverse views), thus necessitating a new theological paradigm that moves beyond the simplistic and divisive pluralism-inclusivism-exclusivism typology and instead accounts for the diversity of positions seen among evangelicals.After an introduction to the goal and scope of this work in chapter one, chapter two shows how the unevangelized debate has evolved throughout the history of the church. Chapter three focuses on the origins of the threefold typology of pluralism, inclusivism, and exclusivism, examining key theologians Hendrik Kraemer, Karl Rahner, and John Hick, as well as looking at the works of Alan Race and Gavin D'Costa. Chapter three also reveals how the typology came to be widely accepted, especially among evangelicals. The literature and topical review in chapter four reveals the diversity of views in contemporary evangelicalism regarding the fate of the unevangelized. Critiques of the threefold typology are then examined in chapter five, and the threefold typology is shown to be inadequate, particularly when it comes to describing soteriological positions regarding the unevangelized. Chapter six provides principles for working towards a new paradigm and proposes a diagnostic tool which best represents the diversity of views on the unevangelized. The new paradigm starts with the two biblical axioms of salvation in Christ alone and the universal need for salvation. These axioms are followed by five questions on: exceptions for salvation apart from explicit faith, limited or universal opportunity in life, opportunity for salvation after death, the nature of hell, and degree of certainty regarding the fate of the unevangelized. The new paradigm affirms biblical teaching, avoids the terms of the original typology, is simple enough to be understood, and adequately accounts for the diversity of views held by evangelical theologians. An up-to-date typology of fourteen positions is then presented which represent the main views found in evangelicalism on the fate of the unevangelized today. Chapter seven concludes with a synopsis of this work and some final thoughts.
